Couples Who Met on the Set

There has been a recent chain of events in Hollywood. More and more people are leaving their spouses to canoodle with their co-star from the set of a movie or television show. It is kind of scary to think that your loved one is 'at work' earning money for the family, and at the same time banking on heartache for the family as well.

So, what makes someone abandon the life they have at home for the fictional life they have at work? Well, I'm not expert, but I am sure the 'office affair' is nothing new. I can remember several stories of how an actor or actress left their counterpart to be with their co-star. It's the whole the-grass-is-greener phenomenon. What most of these infidels fail to realize is that green grass is obtained through constant maintenance. If you don't invest and nurture your lawn, of course it's going to fade and turn brown.

Pictures are an integral part of any wedding day. They capture moments that may have otherwise been missed if it had not been for the keen eye of a photographer.

The day Pilar (Ian's oldest sister) and her now-husband were married, the January skies were clear and the snow was as removed as rain during a parade. Even if the weather had dampened the mood of the atmosphere outside, nothing could have destroyed the magic taking place inside the church.

There were tons of flashes on hand as the wedding ceremony began. Cameras of all magnitudes were whipped out of purses, off laps, and immediately thrust into the air to capture the smiles, cries, and nerves.

Lucky for Pilar, her cousin Keith was there to share his artistic genius in the field of photography. Here are a few of the great moments he was able to capture:

To say these pictures are beautiful would be an understatement. I can look at each one and place myself in the moment. Isn't that the emotion pictures are supposed to invoke?

Running of the Brides

Filene's Basement is holding their famous Running of the Brides event July 31, 2009 in Washington, D.C. at the Mazza Gallerie from 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM.

I attended this same event last year with Ian's sister. Take a look at me in the PINK SHIRT in the bottom, left corner of the picture:

They even photographed my massive pile of dresses I had stashed behind the register:

This bride-to-never-be will be walking right pass the Running of the Bride event held at the Mazza Gallerie. I sent an email out months ago when the idea of a wedding was an actual reality. A lot, and I mean A LOT, has changed since that email.

In the email, I detailed my request for a select ~~many~~ few to attend the event with me. I was going to get a room near-by so we could be in line nice and early. Maybe even stay up late and have an old school sleep over like we were in junior high. Most agreed, some reluctant, others just ignored me as usual. They are use to my demanding emails filled with outrageous requests and endless begging. Which reminds me....did you VOTE for my Family to WIN a VACATION http://blog.homeaway.com/node/1476? I was reminded of my joyous outing with family and friends when a text came through on my phone. It read something like this:

"Hey kea...going through my calendar and saw july 31 for the running of the
brides. Is this still going on?"

I choked. Stomach churned. Then, I typed my response:

"The only thing I'm running for is the border."

And just like that a piece of my life was deleted from a calendar.

I feel like I'm becoming a downer in the world of wedding. I was beginning to think I was the only ~~girl~~ woman who thought weddings were overkill. That is until I began talking to other women.

The other day, I had a great conversation with Ian's cousin. We talked about:

setting a bedtime for the kids
unwavering love of grandparents
our lack domestication
my noticable absence from events
our putting an end to playing 'house' in our relationships.

Let's just say we talked about a plethora of STUFF.

Ironically, we were on the same page, same chapter, and maybe even the same book. I say 'ironically" because years ago, when Ian and I made our dating debut, his cousin was not very accepting of me. She said some things that were very hurtful and mean-spirited. It was along the lines of I'll "never have the family's last name." Gulp!

Luckily, we all matured and she has become a great person to talk to. Who knew we had so much in common?!

This time there was no Kleenex involved. It was a casual conversation over an unlikley episode of me washing week old dishes while seasoning chicken to go on the grill as the boys yelped out word playing the Wii. Girl talk at its finest.

Who knew that on Thanksgivng Day in 1997, the girl who didn't approve of me would make a prediction about my relationship with Ian. just like that, her mean-spirited and hurtful comment became my reality. This time I am no longer upset. Marriage is not about a name change. It's about a change in the way you love and live. Right now, SMITH seems to be working just fine.

Time

I finally looked at the countdown. It shows a little over 14 months.

14 months? Where did time go?

It never stands still for anyone. anything. anybody.

Time can be our friend when we think of all the moments we'll have to share with our future husband or wife. It can be great when you think of how many days you'll have to relax on the beach for your honeymoon. Time looks great when we think of the all the chances we'll have to wake-up to the person we love each morning. Time can be beautiful.

With the good, comes the bad.

Time can be our enemy when we think of all the moments that cause great stress during wedding planning. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to return phone calls to vendors, set appointments, or call our family and friends (who we neglect during this time). It can be disastrous when you think of all the work waiting for you when you return from your wonderful vacation. Time appears to be a stranger when we think of all the chances we could have said "I love you", but didn't, and then it's too late.

Oh Time. Who are you? A friend or foe?

I wanted you to move quickly when I was in the midst of planning, but now I wish I could erase you and start all over. Build a new day.

Oh Time. When will you come? Sooner or Later.

I keep wondering if I will ever get married, or even if I want to. Nothing makes sense anymore. Am I suppose to be a bride?

Oh Time. Only you can tell.

You, Time, are the reason why I am uncertain of so many things.

Time, is not on my side.

She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not

I love you Wedding Warrior. I am just at a point where I do not know what to do. I miss you like crazy. What is the next step in our relationship?

If I comeback to you, things will have to be different. First, I will write about wedding ideas as a whole, and not as a reflection of my planning (my wedding has come to a complete halt). Second, I will write about random wedding ideas. Not all will be popular. May not even be interesting, but it will definitely be random like most of my thoughts, lol. Lastly, I will work on bringing you great giveaways from great sponsors. It's the least I can do for your extreme patience. I know we have been here before, but everyone deserves another chance.

As I pick-away the petals of the flower I call Wedding Warrior, I am anxious to see what I will land on. "She loves me, She loves me not. She loves me, She loves me not." No one knows. I don't even know.

Inspiration comes from the things we see all around us. Right now, my vision for a dream wedding is blurry. It is hard to see the potential that is ahead.

Sometimes I find it scary to think that I am at peace with not being married. Sure, this changes from week to week, month to month, but overall I find myself okay. We tend to get wrapped-up in the glitz and glamour of planning and overlook the facts. The fact that it's been days since you last communicated with your partner. The fact that you don't even get along with half the family. The fact that you sleep in separate rooms. The fact that you are living well beyond your means. Think about it. Are you going to have a WEDDING or a MARRIAGE?

When I wed, I want it to be right. I want all the LY's to be in check: emotionalLY, finacialLY, mentalLY, and spiritualLY.

So, in short, YES, I do love Wedding Warrior. Enough to come to the realization that weddings are productions and marriages are productive. A wedding is what you put on to please your ego, but a marriage is what you work on to generate an everlasting love. I am not saying I am not guilty of wanting a beautiful wedding, but this is what I keep telling myself in order to stay grounded. I've witness too many multi-million dollar wedding days turn into 1 shaky year of a marriage resulting in divorce.

I love myself and my family too much to enter this 'contract' without reading all the fine print.

So Wedding Warrior, I love you. Enough to make our relationship an eternity. I'll be back (in Arnold S. voice of course)!!

Bouquet Toss

I just came from a wedding. My son did another great job as a ring bearer. The flower girl and ring bearer seem to get just as much attention as the bride and groom. I just hope the kids are okay after all the flashes that went off as they entered the room. Whew! It was like Britney Spears getting out of a car with no undergarments and flashed her...well, you know the rest.

What I really wanted to talk about is the bouquet toss. Is it really necessary? No one likes to be SINGLED-out, literally. It kills me when I see innocent women being shoved onto the dance floor to catch the ~~always~~ gaudy bouquet. You know, the one that is made especially for the toss, with flowers potent enough to trigger your allergies. Yes. That one!

There is always that one person who is hiding in the depths of the crowd, hoping to go unnoticed. Then, there is the eager beaver who will do anything in her power to catch the bouquet. Next, there is someone who slips or falls and shows all their 'goodies'. And lastly, there is the faker who pretends to jump for the bouquet, but suddenly ducks to let the others get a go at it.

And let's not forget the song used for the bouquet toss. Ever since Beyonce put out 'Single Ladies', the wedding reception (and the world) has never been the same. Here's a look at some of the many videos that tossed the bouquet at all the single ladies:

One things for sure, Beyonce is one, smart cookie. This song will be around forever. There will always be a bouquet toss. There will always be a wedding. And there will surely be at least one single lady somewhere in the world!

Update on Project Heineken

Early in my posting, I mentioned a project I was working on. I found this brilliant idea from Martha Stewart's website. Here is the original post about Project Heineken.

I am happy to say I am still collecting. I have to find the time to count how many caps I have collected. I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I walked out on the deck and found this treasure waiting for the garbage man:

How dare Ian throw this away. I am always on the guys (and gals, too) at every event. I've told them over and over not to throw their caps away. Instead, they send me on a wild chase to find the green caps. You should see me digging them out of the dirt, fetching through the trash, and browsing any area where heavy drinking is in session. It's hilarious.

This idea is great. I can't wait to try a few out for fun.

Remember to always drink responsibly and legally.

I'm STILL Here...sort of!

No internet. No computer. No job. Nothing to say. Sort of.

I have been going through a lot lately. As some of you know, I have not been working for quite a while now. For the most part, we have been getting by, but like everything going on now, times are getting hard.

I have been working on finding a job. One that fits my schedule. That really makes no sense because no job ever fits your schedule. My schedule consists of getting up, getting my son off to school, and doing absolutely nothing. I may sound like a loser to some of you, but this is what most people want to do at some point in life. Trust me. You have felt this way before.

Instead of throwing myself a pity party, I have decided to get out there and find a job. Of course it will not be one that I adore (personal assistant to Vera Wang, publicist for Beyonce, stylist to the stars), but I need some source of income. And being as though I have not mastered the whole make-money-from-your-blog thingy, I must head-out to the real world. It is time to leave the nest.

(Brace yourself for a whining session) I hate working weekends. I don't like late hours. I'm not a morning person. Can't stand long commutes. These dislikes alone leave me with not a lot of options. However, I am willing to suck it up. Why? I have a family to care for. It is stressful to have to think about if the lights are going to be cut-off, if moving back with your parents is just a month away, or if dinner will be in the form of a frozen dinner.

In no way do I think we will ever suffer tremendously. We have the support of too many family and friends to ever let this happen. But, everyone is in the same boat this time around. We all need a little help. I want to make things better for my family without constant assistance. It is not about pride. It is simply about respect. Why should we think our problems are any bigger than the next person? Why should we think, as we learned growing-up, that money grows on trees? We shouldn't and we don't.

Hopefully, everything will turn out okay. I'm sure it will. I really don't know how else I can do what I love to do (BLOG) and get paid for it without asking. And just in case some big-time sponsor stops by and decides my story is heartfelt and wants to help me out a bit (believe me, I've done it for others in the blogosphere) here is a link to my account:

You may think it's silly and shows a lot of nerve, but think about the waitress who receives the $200 tip for a $10 order all because she was doing her job. I like to think I am doing my job as a mother and partner. I don't think I should be rewarded for it, but a little donation would give me the boost I need to get back on track.

The jokes on me I know. I could really use all the laughs I can get right now. Who knows, there may be someone out there who actually cares. I'll guess we'll just wait and see.

Without HE, There Can Be No WE

UPDATE: I lost a follower after this post. Guess my beliefs drove them away. These are my thoughts. I am not recruiting anyone.

I am a 'student' of God. I was enrolled in the school of Christianity by default. It's what I've known since the beginning of my own existence. I have been given the necessary tools to succeed - a bible in this case. Only I can devote my time and master the contents of this text. I'm in control of the type of 'student' I want to be. Life will quiz me. God will will test me. Whether I fail or succeed depends on my commitment to learning His word. I'm sure I will be faced with several obstacles, be bullied by the devil, and question my own strength and dedication this this journey.

Will I make the grade?

All I can do is study. Study the word. Study my life. Study my environment.

I am not looking to become the 'teacher's pet'. He knows and loves me for who I am. Imperfections, flaws, and all.

I am a student of God.

Now that all my 'deepness' is out of the way, I wanted to share a passage with you. It's sort of the reason I wrote this post. I was reading my Women's Devotional Bible 2 (Don't find it hard to believe. I read the bible. I mentioned I'm on a journey already. I never said I didn't change course at times). Before I open it, I always have a conversation with God. I ask him to point me to a great passage. Bring something to my attention. This is what He did for me today:

He never fails me. I am always shown some sort of message that somehow caters to my reality. I know I am not married, but I have been given a new outlook on marriage. Just days ago I was upset about the idea that a wedding planned for 2010 would no longer be given life. Today, my hope is restored. If this is what I have to look forward to, I say bring it on.

Let us all continue to study HIS (whomever you believe in) word. Remember, without HE (God), there can be no WE (marriage).

Wedding No More...For Now!

I wanted to address my abrupt post of my wedding trials. Yes, I said there would be no wedding. No, I am not in the bed lying in the fetal position. Yes, my heart aches sometimes. But, I am more than this.

Ian and I have been together for years. Heck, we've been together longer than most Hollywood relationships. Well, that may not be the best example, but this is not spur-of-the-moment decision. We know what works for our relationship. We have been through all the major phases of life. Together.

There was high school where we started dating. Then, college pulled us apart. Finally, parenthood made us grow-up (to some degree). Logically, marriage was the next step. But I must admit, it has to feel right. It has to fit like a puzzle and not require glue to be held together.

I love Ian more than anything in life. We just have to face the reality that, although 17 months away, time is not on our side. We need time. Time to build. To grow. To come closer to God. Afterall, He has complete control over our reality.

What we (and by we, I mean women) fail to realize is that wedding planning occurs from the time we are little girls. We collect. Fantasize. Dream. Hope. And all of the above. We yearn for the day when we find 'the one' and fall madly in love. Lucky for me, I have found 'the one'. I am in this for longevity and love. I do not want a one-day, whirlwind day of events to overshadow the after part of a wedding. You are bonded to someone forever. Forever. Say it with me...FOR-EV-ER. This is what I want, and I will not settle for anything less.

I am projecting a wedding in 2011. Seems so distant, but so close to my heart. We will be able to accomplish a lot more this way. The journey will be paved with more opportunities, and less obstacles. I am more excited now than when I watched the wedding countdown break the 18 month mark. Oh well. I will just add on more days. Pull the pages from the calendar as the months end. In no time I will be making the appointment for my first dress fitting. It will all work out. Trust me. I have faith.
